Diversity and Modernity

The artists featured in the exhibition represent a broad spectrum of creative approaches and crafts. Some are traditional artisans who, with dedication and skill, continue age-old techniques. Others are designers who enrich these traditions with innovative ideas and modern functionality. And still others perceive manual work as a new medium for artistic expression, expanding the possibilities of crafts.
Despite their differences, they are all united by one thing – they work with their own hands and put not just thought and skill into their works, but character and authenticity.

Behind Albena Djokova’s delicate, detailed decorated dishes lies a long-standing passion for the material, which began in childhood with a collection of ceramic figurines. A semester in Italy solidified her choice of profession and the decision to create her own studio in Sofia. Her trademark are droplets of porcelain diligently placed on the surface of the products, which turn into embossed dots, irresistibly pleasant to the touch.
Alexandra Georgieva – Sashettu picked up a pencil and a brush while still a toddler and has since then only let them go as a last resort. Sometimes she replaces them with a tufting gun or a tattoo machine, but regardless of the weaponry, the result always bears her unmistakable signature. Raised on Cartoon Network, Sashettu populates our world with aesthetics and characters that seem to have emerged from the animated swamp of the unconscious.

When she’s not fighting for equality as a member of the Bulgarian Fund for Women, Alexandra Kamburova – Tulipa dedicates her time to another cause that she considers her own – the preservation of Bulgarian traditions. Although created with modern technology, her carpets and masks are inspired by local Kukeri rituals and carpet weaving. You can join the tufting workshops that Tulipa organizes throughout the country without any prior skills – all you need is curiosity and an urge to create something soft.
Angelina Tsvetkova creates contemporary jewelry in limited conceptual collections. Their titles suggest the distant destinations to which the author’s thoughts and inspiration fly. She is fascinated by experimental juxtapositions of volume, lightness, color, and transparency. In fact, translucent is the exact description for the ethereal, lace-like works, which it is sometimes hard to believe are made of metal.

Antoaneta Ramjulska – Ramjuly has rightly enjoyed a long, successful, and cosmopolitan career in the field of jewelry and fashion design. Her achievements include haute couture productions, a brooch design award by the Union of Bulgarian Artists, and the creation of accessories for Hollywood productions. Her jewelry combines elegance, experimentation, and stories told in color and form.

For Artefakti founder Atanas Konstantinov, jewelry is reminiscent of an architectural object on the one hand, and of a living organism on the other: an independent, sustainable structure with a number of vital parts that must work in unison to produce magic. Another analogous artifact is a photograph – and it, like jewelry, is a document and treasure of its time. Perhaps that is why there is something contemporary, something Eastern European, and something unwaveringly personal in Artefakti’s works.
Boriana Hadzhimincheva is a self-taught artist. Since childhood, she has studied various applied techniques – drawing, knitting, sewing, jewelry making, and modeling, but when she discovered embroidery as a means of expression, everything fell into place and BOD was born. Boryana takes on the role of a creative researcher, seeking revelation, harmony and beauty in order to give life to her delicate, unexpected and seemingly skyward-reaching works.
